-1 Part one: prologue It was the rain. The rain falls so hard that you knew it was a storm. But the young man standing outside of a building on the roof, thought of the rain as music. A symphony that he himself had front row seats for. He stood there, drenched, wearing no more than a white T-shirt, jeans, and black boots. If anyone could have seen him, they'd wonder why he tormented himself by standing there in the storm. With the winds so strong, it could have knocked him off and caused him to fall the huge distance to the street below. But he's thinking of something. He's having thoughts of a past that he had once wanted to forget. But the problem is that he can't forget. He will never forget? That night? 10 years ago. Chapter 1 The boy stood there looking at the older kids. At 11 years old, the kid had a black eye, a slightly bloody nose, and a vicious look upon him that said that he wasn't giving up on the fight. He had himself in a stance that was both offensive and defensive given the situation he was in. The boy was fighting a few kids that were more around the age of 15 or 16 years old. His 10-year-old sister lay on the ground crying. The teens had no doubt been picking on her and he had come around and spotted this. Being one of very big love for his family, he had in return picked a fight with them. The fight was actually going pretty well for the 11-year-old. The Black eye and the bloody nose were not as bad as they seemed. In fact the bloody nose was because he tried to dodge a punch to his mouth that had not quite gone as well as it seemed. The black eye was because both he and a teenager had tried to punch each other. The initial shock of the 11-year-old, punching the teenager in the nose, had made the teen's punch become a bit limp and he ended up hitting the 11-year-old in the eye. The teenager himself ended up on the floor, holding his own nose. The 11-year-old's sister finally got up. "Seth, stop fighting," she called out to him as she stopped crying. She didn't want her brother to get hurt any worse by the teenagers. Seth, the 11-year-old, just stood there with his fists balled up. He obviously didn't want to give up on the fight. But the teens just laughed. "Yeah, Seth. Listen to your sister if you know what's good for you," the leader of the teen gang, Jason, says. "What do you know about it? I'm not the one losing," Seth says. The teens start laughing harder, but Seth goes and kicks one of the teens in the knee. As the teen grabs his knee in pain and starts hopping, Seth goes and pushes him to the ground. The other teen, the leader, just grabbed Seth by the back of his shirt and threw him to the ground near his sister. "This is getting boring," says the leader of the gang. Two of the other teens help the one with the bloody nose up and they all stand near their leader. Seth stands up and glares at them. "What don't want more?" Seth asks. The leader just looks at him and smirks. "Come on boys, wouldn't want the runt to try to kick our knees again," the leader says as he turns and walks away. Seth no doubt wanted to do just that or worse. But as he saw them walking away, a part of him was glad. He'd been brave enough for one day. As the teenagers leave the area, Seth turned towards his sister. She smiles towards him. "Thank you," she says. "Not a problem," he says and then he picks up a bag that he had dropped earlier. He hands her the bag and she takes out a candy. She eats it as Seth grabs her hand and they begin walking home. Samantha smiles all the way to their block. Her brother had saved her from bullies. He was her hero. Chapter 2 The Donavines lived in a house three blocks away from where the fight with the bullies had taken place. Seth and Samantha had made that walk lots of times as there was a general store nearby that sold candy and other things. The siblings would go there to buy some candy and a soda once every week with some of their allowance money. That had in fact been the reason for the fight. The teenagers had come to rob Samantha of her money, but she didn't have it with her and the bullies didn't believe her. Seth had in fact taken the money for the candy and drinks and had been buying it at that time. This meant that the teens could not steal the money. As they walked home, they shared some more of the candy, but decided to hold off on the sodas until they got home for supper. When they got to their house, their mother, Maya, was just exiting and on her way to her car. Their father, Nathan, was still in the house. Maya saw her kids walking into the driveway. "You kids look like you were in a fight," she said half-jokingly. Seth just shrugged as they stopped. "Some bullies tried to take our allowance money. Seth had it though and he picked a fight with them so they would stop pushing me around," Samantha explained. Maya just took a glance and sighed. She smiled though and rubbed his hair. "Always trying to be the good guy, eh Seth?" she asked. Seth just shrugged and stayed silent. "The future holds a great deal for you kids, and I hope that when the time comes, your greatness will shine," she said. She then gave both Seth and Samantha a kiss on their foreheads. "Alright kiddos, your father's in the house. Go get cleaned and fixed up. Then grab some supper," Maya said. Seth nodded his head and walked into the house. Maya took a good look towards him as he walked into the house and took another sigh. Something worried her about her son. She then turned towards Samantha. "Your brother loves you, young lady. Remember that he will always protect you, and I assume that you'll do the same for him," she said. Samantha nodded her head. "I would?but I don't think he needs my help," Samantha said in response. "Probably not, but you're his moral support and that's very important," Maya explained. Samantha nodded again and she kissed her mom. Then she walked into the house as Maya got into her car, pulled out of the driveway and drove off. Inside the house, Seth went towards the bathroom when his father, Nathan walked out of his den. "Hey guy, what's up?" he asked. "Got into a fight. Beat up some teens," Seth answered. "Oh, I guess I can see that," Nathan noted. "Come on and I'll clean you up." He then took Seth into the bathroom and got the first aid kit. Sitting on the toilet, Nathan began cleaning up the wounds. "You're getting quite strong, aren't you? Taking on teenagers could be a big task for an 11-year-old," he said. "I guess so," Seth said. Seth wasn't much of a talker. He liked to act more than he spoke. But when he did speak, it wasn't a very big thing. He just had a thing for being to the point and giving fluid advice. Once the wounds were cleaned and bandaged, Nathan let Seth go so he could get a meal with his sister. But he kept thinking about the way Seth acted in the different situations that he was confronted with. Nathan wondered if that was the way he was all the time. Nathan wasn't his real father to begin with. Neither was Maya his real mother or Samantha his sister. Seth was for all tense and purposes adopted at birth. But nobody really knew his parents. The fact was that Nathan and Maya had a secret concerning Seth's birth and they never wanted to speak of it until it was time. Now wasn't the time. Though there were moments when Nathan wondered what Seth's real parents were like, and if he'd taken any traits from them. At the end of the day though, Nathan loved Seth as much as he loved Samantha, his true biological child. And both siblings had a relationship that Nathan couldn't have hoped for more. At the end of the day, both Nathan and Maya prepared to defend him from the darkness within. Chapter 3 After dinner, Seth and Samantha went to watch some TV. Maya and Nathan were going to join them when the doorbell rang. Maya took a glance at Nathan and he nodded. He walked towards the door, heading through the living room where he could tell that the siblings were looking his way. He calmed them with a smile and then when he got to the door, he opened it gently and took a look outside. There was a man standing there that Nathan recognized as Joe. Joe was a man that was tall, almost as tall as Nathan, but slightly chubby. Nathan stepped outside and closed the door gently. He turned to face Joe. "Hello Joe," said Nathan. "Hello Nathan. I'm sorry to bother you, but I was in the neighborhood and figured I'd drop by to give you a reminder of tomorrow's meeting," Joe said. Nathan nodded his head in small recognition of what Joe was talking about. "I know, thank you," said Nathan. "We'll be there. But I'm sure you understand that my wife's having some second thoughts about this. I'm having them as well." Joe seemed to keep a calm face, as if he'd been expecting something similar to this response. Joe was certain that they had considered and reconsidered things as of late. It was impossible not to. "I understand what you're going through. I cannot help you much more than I already have I'm afraid," Joe said. "Believe me I understand that these eleven years have been great for you. But you know what they're going to say. You signed a contract as per the project." Nathan looked Joe in the eyes to see what he was thinking. Sadly he was not a psychic. "I do know what they will say. But what more can do they do to us? Fire us and take back the test subject? We've been considering things and for the most part, we haven't made a final decision. I'm just wondering if we're making the best choice to begin with," Nathan said. "The company has had their concerns as well, I won't lie. But in the end it's for the betterment of what we fight for. What we strive for in the first place. Can we really back down now?" Joe asked. This question spawned something within Nathan and he felt now that his decision should be made. Can we back down now? They had thought about it?they had considered it? Was it too late to back down or should they go all the way? Nathan nodded his head. "No we cannot back down. And I'm sure that I will not back down from the choice that I have made, just as much as they will not back down from their decisions," Nathan replied. Joe nodded his head. "I just hope you're not making a mistake. I really don't want to see anything happen to your family. Give my best to the Mrs. and the kids," he said as he turned towards his cark. "In the long run I'm sure our investment will be well met. I'll see you tomorrow." Joe then went off towards his car, got in, and drove off. Nathan stood there; unaware that Maya had come out and stood there next to him to watch Joe leaving. When he turned and noticed her, he saw the look of worry in her eyes. "We'll talk about this later. In the meantime let us keep our kids company," he said as they walked into the house to watch TV in the living room. Seth watched as Nathan walked into the house. Seth could almost tell something was up with his father, but figured it may be nothing. But something did seem to be nagging at him. "What was that about, dad?" asked Seth. Nathan turned towards him and smiled. Good ole Seth trying to be a voice to talk to. "It's nothing Seth. It was just a friend reminding me about my work meeting tomorrow and some bad news concerning a friend of ours. But it's not a bad thing. Now you two continue watching your cartoons and mom and I will join you," he said. "But don't forget to get to bed though. Tomorrow's a school day and I don't' want you two tired when you wake." Seth nodded and Samantha slightly groaned. But Maya nudged Nathan as if reminding him herself of something. Nathan got the clue and cleared his throat. "Seth, don't forget that you'll be coming with us to work," Nathan said. Seth nodded his head. Samantha took a glance towards Seth, but then continued watching cartoons. That night the Donavines went to bed. Seth did what he did and Nathan and Maya went to their room. The morning would hold new things and the beginning of things to come that would shape the future of their family for better or worse. The simple truth was that dark deeds that Nathan and Maya have committed in the past have finally begun to catch up to them and it was going to hit them hard. But they were going to face it and they were going to stand tall. As Maya lay in bed, she thought about the eleven years that have passed. She thought of the company they worked for, and she thought of that day that had brought a bundle of joy into her life. Nathan had told her of what he had talked about with Joe. It was in fact the company that had assigned them the project that had lasted for exactly eleven years and tomorrow they were going to give out a decision to a choice that would make or break a deal in the works. Nathan got into bed and lay next to her. He looked towards her. She took a glance towards him. "Do you regret the things we've done?" asked Maya. "Not really. I think we've done all we can," replied Nathan. "He's just a little boy Nathan," Maya said. "That's the part that I don't regret, Maya. We raised a strong, loving, and very caring young man," Nathan said. "He's grown. He's matured. He's strengthened a lot. But that doesn't mean that we have to regret taking him in. Everything he is, I believe that we were a big part of it. We knew what we were getting when we took on the assignment. Maya smiled when thinking of the things she's done for her children. "So when the time comes tomorrow and they want him back. You won't regret the decision?" asked Maya. "Not a chance. I think we'll let him speak for himself. They won't argue with that," Nathan replied. "Besides if they do, they'll have a hard time keeping him contained." He couldn't help but chuckle at that thought. Yes his mind was made up as of now. He was going to keep the boy for himself and he was sure that Seth would choose to stay with his parents. The company would try to take the boy away from them but no matter what the company did, Nathan and Maya were going to keep their child away from the bad things that the company would make him do. Chapter 4 Nobody really noticed that the children's door never opened. Nobody could have really seen a slight seeping of fog like smoke under the door. The kitchen would be a different story though. There was a big pile of smoke that went almost to the ceiling. And from it came Seth and Samantha. How they had managed that would be considered strange by some. But perhaps this is what Maya and Nathan were talking about. Seth had an ability that only he and his family knew about. In truth, Seth had a few abilities that only they knew about. One of these abilities was an ability to cause the fog like smoke that would teleport him between two locations. And anything he was touching would come with him. In this case, it was Samantha, whose hand he was holding. "Ok get your glass of water before mom or dad find us," Seth whispered. Samantha nodded and went to one of the cupboards and got out a glass. Seth took watch and closed his eyes. He could sense when others were coming. As he waited, he could sense the innocence of his sister. She really was a lovely young girl. As he opened his eyes and took a glance towards her, he saw that she was ready. She was holding the glass of water in her hands. "I'm ready Seth," she said as she held out her hand for Seth to hold. He took her hand and once again they were in the fog and back in their room. Samantha finished her drink and went back to bed. Seth on the other hand lay there thinking before he ended up closing his eyes to fall asleep. He could swear that he'd felt a thought coming from his parents' room. Something concerning him and a decision he would have to make tomorrow. In the morning, it was business as usual. The siblings got dressed and Samantha was off to school. Seth found himself getting ready and waiting for the trip to his parents' work. Maya smiled when she came out of her room and got things ready. Nathan did similar, though he wasn't smiling. He was all business for the most part as that was how he always was when getting ready for a work day. Seth sat there watching television. Then he turned towards his parents when they called his name. He got up, turned off the TV and followed them out to the van. "Now remember to speak politely and try to be calm," Maya explained. Seth simply nodded his head as he got into the van. When they pulled out of the driveway, Seth felt like this was going to be a life changing event. He didn't want to tell them but he could sense that they were scared. This was another ability he had. He had mind powers. But he had to focus a bit to use some of his powers like the teleportation. That in turn would make him a bit dizzy after long moments of hard focus. Nathan had told him not to do such hard focusing until he'd gained in mental strength. Nathan turned towards Seth. "Ready for a big day?" he asked. Yes," was all Seth could reply. That was all that was said on the way to Reign-Tech. Reign-Tech had been a big company once. Now it was a privately run corporation that made its projects within the confines of secrecy and small numbers. The building stood on the outskirts of the small town of Eden's Ville. When they drove up to the main gate of the building's outskirts, they were greeted by the gatekeeper. He was an elderly man, walking up to the van. Seth took note of sadness in his mind. Perhaps he was worried about something. Walking into the building, Seth took glances around the hallways and doorways that he walked by. He really didn't like this place for some odd reason. He felt like he remembered this building. He shouldn't have by all means. But it was all the same that he felt that he did. And perhaps it was the truth that he did. But at the moment, she was too busy taking looks around. When Nathan had Seth sit down, they all did. The waiting period began when Nathan had mentioned to a secretary that he was there for the meeting. She had informed him that they would be ready for the three of them shortly. Nathan had nodded his head and thus asked Seth to sit down. The wait wasn't a very big one. But Seth had a thing of being patient. So he didn't care. He just began to daydream about things. Suddenly he was aroused by a tap on his shoulder. He took a look at his watch. Half an hour had passed. He looked and saw his mother and father by the door. There was a man standing next to him, who had no doubt been the one that tapped him. "It's time to come in," said the man. Seth recognized him as the man that was at the house yesterday, by things he felt from the man's mental aura. This man was Joe. Seth got up and walked towards his parents and they all entered the room together. It was a big room with a large round table. Seth sat next to his father and smiled a reassuring smile. Nathan smiled back and looked towards a man that he recognized. This must have been the boss of the company as he seemed to have a big aura around him of supremacy. He was a thin, yet slightly muscular built man, with a suit on. He had glasses, which made him look slightly sophisticated, yet he also had that slightly wild look that said that you should not mess with. He must have had a sense of dominance, and he was no doubt focusing that energy as he sat there today. As he leaned forward and spoke, you knew to listen to what he was saying. "I'm glad that we can be here today to discuss the future of this project," he said. Everyone sat and listened. He gave a glance towards everyone there. He then took a lingered glance towards Seth, and Seth just took a glance right back at him with a simple and emotionless look. It was not beyond Nathan to notice this exchange and couldn't help but wonder if for a second, that look had unnerved the boss. "We are here for one reason and one reason only," the boss began. He then stood up and took a look around at his associates. "We are here to decide the future of the boy." There was a murmur and looks towards Seth. "What we want to decide is whether he's ready to move on. Nathan Donavine was chosen 11 years ago to take care of the child. He gave the baby a home. He bathed him, raised him, gave him nourishment, and made him the young man he is today. Now we are here to decide what to do with him next. Is he ready to begin the training? Nathan? Is he ready?" The Boss looked towards Nathan for an answer. Nathan sat there as he considered his reply. He wouldn't lie about the answer he was about to give. In truth, he didn't feel that he had to. He just wanted to know the right words to say. Hoping for the proper support, he turned towards Maya. Maya, looking him straight in the eyes, gave him a nod to let him know that she approved of his final decision. That was all the support that he would need. Nathen then turned toward his boss. "Mr. Kay, I believe that Seth is quite ready to begin training," Nathan said, "but whether he feels he is ready is the major question that we cannot ignore. In the end he is the one that would be going through the training. We really should leave it up to him." Mr. Kay, the boss, nodded his head as he took in the answer. "All right I can accept that answer. It is after all a truth. We cannot force anyone to take to something like this without being ready. But the fact is that you yourself said that he is ready," Kay said. Nathan felt that what he said was simply going in one ear and out the other. He said that Seth was ready. But he didn't want Seth doing something he himself didn't feel ready for. And here was Kay obviously going through the thought of having him do it anyway. This is what Nathan figured would happen. They were going to take Seth and keep them from the people who raised him. Nathan and Maya would be out of the project and thus out of the loop. But little did they know that Seth was already getting this realization. He was already feeling the tension in the room between Nathan and Kay. He took a look at his father and mother. He could see the sadness in both of their eyes. He then took a look towards Kay. In Seth's mind, he had to make a move. He just wasn't sure of what to do because of the situation that they were in. There could have been guards waiting outside those doors. "I said that I believed that he was ready, yes. But in the end it's ultimately going to be his decision," Nathan said. The look on his face was unmistakable. He was going to fight for Seth's freedom. And that gave Seth strength. He took a glance at Kay and felt that he was in no way going to stay with the guy. "I want to go home now," said Seth. Everyone took a glance at him. My felt pride in him, and Nathan nodded his head. "Good idea, Seth," said Nathan. "Not really. Nathan, that boy is ours. We made him, and we can control him," Kay said. Nathan stood up, but some guy that had somehow come in without them knowing sat him back down. "Sit!" the man said. Both Maya and Seth tensed up as the man spoke. Nathan had already been tense when he felt the pressure of the hand that was no doubt keeping him down. "Do you really think we were going to let you walk out with them? We are a corporation with an agenda. We have to know our employees and how they react. We knew from the start it was a mistake to give you the child and it has come to fruition. Luckily it is a mistake that we do not have to live with. We will get what we want, Nathan. And there is nothing standing in our way," Kay said. But they never had it. They had never seen Seth grow up from the infant to the 11-year-old that he was now. The powers that he had, they had almost forgotten about. Or they had never known about to begin with. It was a mistake that would cost them dearly today. Seth felt himself grow angry. He was the son of Nathan and Maia Donavine and he would not let these people take him away from them. Set up got up from his chair and before anybody could do anything, he pushed the guy away from Nathan. This would not have seemed odd, but the man was pushed pretty hard by an 11-year-old. So hard in fact, he was literally pushed off his feet and flew to the nearest wall. That nearest wall was literally on the other side of the room. My and Nathan looked impressed by this strength that their son had, but not totally surprised. Seth then ran off out of the room and began making his way down the hallway. Nathan and Maya, still coming out of the trance from the last attack could only take a look around the room to see the reactions of the Associates and Kay. Kay almost seemed impressed with the power as well. This was why Nathan wanted to keep his son away from the man. Although he could not show it, Nathan was very proud that Seth was defending himself from this new threat. It was a fact that Kay wouldn't let them enjoy as he was already on the move After Kay got over his shock, the anger grew and he moved towards the door in order to follow the boy. Event he turned towards Nathan, an angry look in his eyes. "If you get that kid back here right now!" He demanded. Nathan just stood up and glared towards Kay. "No, I don't think so. I told you that it was ultimately his choice," he said. Kay looked like he could punch through a wall and still keep going. "Then tell me where the hell he is going!" Kay demanded. Nathan on its lease took a deep breath and said, "I honestly don't know. He could be going anywhere. And that's if he even makes it out of the building," Maya said, though she was only telling half the truth. Kay got the point though. He then turned towards one of his men. "Make sure you catch that kid. Tranquilized him, knock him out if you have a few. I want him alive. It does not matter if he is injured or not!" he called out as he made his way out of the door to the office. He then stopped and looked towards Nathan and Maya. "I should have had you both killed. And since I am a logical man? you are both fired. Forget even cleaning out your offices I want you gone. Now," he said. Both of the Donavines didn't even have to be told twice. They left the room and were lucky that is all that happened. As Seth made his way down the hallway, he remembered how he had gotten to the room in the first place. He was worried that he would lose his way but his memory wouldn't let him. And to point out a fact, he would never forget this in his entire life. The traumas in his life would never be lost on him. Two guards made their way towards him but he dodged and rolled under the both of them as they tried to grab at the collar of his shirt. They continued to give chase though. And soon he could see the main entrance with a group of security guards. Here's the thing that would surprise others. Seth began to speed up. He knew what he was doing. He sped up and they readied for him. They must have figured that they would be able to capture him as he tried to break through them and leave through the doors. But they would never catch him. In fact, truth be told, they would never even see him once he got close to them. As Seth continued to get close, a mysterious fog appeared out of nowhere. Seth soon disappeared into that wall of fog. The security agents that had followed him were the ones that went through it. The security guards at the door got one hell of a tackle when those that were chasing Seth collided with them and they fell through the door. Maya and Nathan made their arrival to the main entrance and saw what had just happened. When they saw the fog dissipating, they were stunned to see the security guards all confused. Nathan walked up to them. For a moment the security agents forgot that they were fired or didn't even know about it. "What happened? Did you catch him?" Nathan asked with concern on his face, and in his voice. "No?he just vanished," the head of security replied. Nathan turned and looked towards Maya. "Vanished? How can he just vanish?" asked Maya. There was never really a reply as it was clear that one Seth's abilities was for the first time witnessed by those that have actually put it on him without knowing it'd be used against them. Chapter 5 He was gone from their lives. At least that's what Nathan thought. He felt that he had lost one of the better things in his life and could not get it back for lack of trust. The son that he had cared for since the boy was born. He walked toward his van followed by Maya. He took a look at the building that he'd been fired from. Maya got into the van just as he did. He slowly started up the vehicle and began making his way down the road. He took a glance towards Maya. "We'll find him. He's going to be fine," he said. She looked towards him. "We knew that he had this power. We figured he would use it to escape the facility. He did exactly as he should have done." Maya nodded her head and looked out the window. Nathan could tell that she wasn't very convinced. She loved Seth as much as she loved her own full blood daughter, Samantha. And that was saying something considering Samantha was her world. Nathan felt that Seth would go some where he could be safe and be with the people he knew he could trust. And he knew one place where that would be. After all he has said himself that he wanted to go home? with his parents. *** Samantha was walking down the hallway of her school to her next class. She looked at people that way better. Smiling she went back at them and said hi to a couple of her friends. She was an alright kid in school. Very popular with some of the other girls and boys her age. Heck even some of the girls her age wanted her to introduce them to Seth. Suddenly some girl screamed and ran out of the girl's bathroom. Samantha was a bit confused. But soon she heard the familiar voice of Seth's crying as if he'd been upset about something. She quickly got inside and there was Seth in one of the stalls. There was a small cloud of smoke that had obviously revealed to her how he had gotten there in the first place. She figured that he must have miscalculated the boy's bathroom for the girl's bathroom. She could almost chuckle as she locked the door but changed her mind as this must have been a serious situation and did not want to offend him. Seth, sensing the presence of Samantha walked out of the stall. He took a glance at her as she walked closer to him. Letting his emotions calm down a bit, they both waved and smiled at each other. Then he grew serious and gave her a hug. "They wanted to take me away from the family," he said. Samantha, trying to understand what he had said, looked towards him with concern. "Who want to take you away?" she asked. "The guys who made me," Seth replied. Samantha had a worried look upon her face, and yet seemed confused at the same time. "Can you concentrate enough to get us home? I would get you some medicine from mom and dad's room once we arrive," she said. Seth had to think about this for a second. Then he looked at her and nodded his head. "Okay but we better get going soon. I think some of those girls may have called some of the teachers about me being in the girl's bathroom," Seth said. Samantha could not help but chuckle a bit now has Seth himself said that. "Sure I think that's a good idea. And don't worry I won't tell mom and dad," she said with a smile. Seth smiled and took her hand as he began concentrating on arriving at their front lawn. Soon the smoke began to appear once again and Seth and Samantha walked right through it, disappearing and leaving the room empty. Soon the teachers manage to open the door and walked in, followed by students. They were surprised to find that no one was in the bathroom considering the reports that they had heard. One of the teachers could tell there was a plume of smoke that had been dissipating but could not tell where it was coming from. One of the windows was open but apparently not wide enough for a student to escape. They then left and thought nothing more of it for the rest of the day. Chapter 6 The home of the Donavines once again filled with smoke in the kitchen. The siblings walked out of it and Samantha forced Seth to sit down in one of the chairs. He was holding his head a bit more now and had his eyes closed. This was only natural as he had now strained a bit more just to get them home. Samantha walked towards the cupboard and got a glass. She then filled it with water and gave it to Seth. "Drink just a little. I'll get you the pain relief," she said as she left. It was once again that Seth could feel the love and innocence in Samantha's mind, heart, and soul. She loved her brother and he loved her. Seth sat there thinking about things. He knew what was going on and how he was away from it all. But still he had to be careful. They could still want him back, and may one day come to get. But he decided that he was going to stay way from them. When he was old enough he would get his own life and his own way. He would stay in touch with his family but when he was old enough he was going to keep himself safe from the people that wanted him for evil. Samantha finally came back with some pain relief pills. She gave them to Seth and he took them while drinking the water. She then sat next to him. For a moment they just sat there staring at each other. "Are you all right?" Asked Samantha. Seth could only nod his head, but did so gently due to the headache. Already the pain was subsiding, and he was feeling a lot less foggy in his mind. Seth stood up and stretched a bit. Although sitting down had made him stiff, in truth. "I was part of a project. Mom and dad adopted me so that they could help raise me for the company they worked for," Seth said. Samantha listened and felt sad for her brother. "But mom and dad love you. You know that," she said. Thank God for Samantha, always sending out hope and purity. "I know that," Seth said smiling. "They try to defend me and keep me from their boss. But in the end I had to escape because the guys were going to take me by force." Samantha could only shake her head and try to comprehend what was going on. "Are you going to run away?" she asked him. "No," someone said. Seth and Samantha turned to spot Maya and Nathan. It was Nathan that had spoken. They must have arrived just as the siblings were speaking about the corporation. "He's going to stay with us. But if he has to, will have some clothes packed," Maya said. "We want your safety," she added that she looked towards Seth. Seth wanted to trust her, and her mental signals indicated that she could indeed be trusted. Seth nodded his head, got up from the chair, and gave her a hug. The moment, although a tense one, was also a moment of relief. His family had found him easily. But there was no doubt that Kay; their ex-boss wasn't going to give up easily. He had fired them, but he wanted to play back and he wasn't going to stop until he found him. There was no mistaking that thought. Nathan took a moment to walk towards a window. For a moment he thought he saw a man standing there. The man had long dreadlocks that went somewhat below the shoulders. He seemed to look as if he'd come from an asylum. Or perhaps it was possible that he came from the company. Nathan definitely considered it weird that this man would be standing there of all places. Nathan blinked, but the man was gone. He looked at Maya, then back towards the window. The man apparently still wasn't there. So Nathan considered, and hoped, that the man must have run off quickly, it was just a figure of his imagination. In any case he was going to figure out something to do for the future and safety of his family. Turning points his family; he considered his next words wisely. "I think it's time we put our house on sale. It's time to make a change," he said as he walked towards Maya and family. "We're moving towards Cherico." Chapter 7 It was the evening of that very same day and Seth was in his room reading a book about dragons. His father, Nathan walked into the room and sat down next to him. "You've always been into those creatures haven't you?" Asked Nathan. Seth turned and looked at him. "I find them fascinating," Seth replied. Nathan nodded his head and said, "They sure are cool. But do you know what else is cool?" Seth just looked at him. "You are very cool. And I am very proud of the way you handled yourself today. You were very brave, and your mom and I were very happy with your decision," Nathan said. Seth just nodded his head and gave a small smile. Nathan patted him on the back and stood up. "You're going to do just fine. I am sure of it," Nathan said. Nathan walked out of the room and down to his bedroom where he saw Maya relaxing on the bed. He went over to the bed and lay down on it. Maya put down the book that she was reading and looked towards him. "Is he going to be all right?" she asked. "I believe that he'll be fine. He's a very strong boy and will grow into a fine man one day," Nathan replied. "I hope that you're right Nathan. I'd hate for something bad to happen to him," Maya said. Summit that could hear what her parents were saying in their room. Then she turned and walked towards the room that she shared with Seth. Entering the room, she walked over towards her bed and sat down. Seth had finished looking at the book and had put it away. Samantha looked towards Seth and figured it was time to talk. "Are you alright, Seth" she asked. "Yeah I'm fine," he replied, "I'm just trying to get over what happened today." Samantha nodded her head. She couldn't truly understand what Seth was going through, but hoped that what happened would not come back to harm their family. She was not there to see what truly happened. And to be honest, from what Seth had said, she really did not want to be there. She was just glad that the evil people could not take Seth away and that he had been able to escape. But she knew that it was only a matter of time before they tried to come and take him away again. She would not let them do so though. And she knew that her family would not allow them to take him at all. All four of them would stand up and fight for the safety of their family. *** That night when everyone was asleep, Seth wasn't. He had snuck out of his bedroom and teleported the roof of the house where he sat looking at the stars. The night was beautiful and clear of clouds. If you wanted to, he can look for the constellations and point them out easily. But something was indeed on his mind. He was thinking about his family, and the way they had raised him. He also thought about his sister Samantha, for whom he had the best relationship with, and could trust with his life. Unlike usual siblings who would fight, Seth and Samantha had not really had that complication. In fact you would think of them as the best of friends. In the long run, Seth was worried about how this day would affect them in the future. Considering the way that Kay was, he was surprised that nothing serious had happened to his parents. Seth could not help but feeling that this day was not the last time that he would see Kay. At this moment he heard a car approach. Seth turned his head and noticed that the car had stopped in front of the house. A man got out of the car that he recognized as Joe. Joe seemed to be a little panicky as he walked towards the door. He looked around to see if anyone had apparently followed him. Ringing the doorbell at least twice, Joe seemed to be waiting to give some news as to probably what the aftermath of the days events were and would be. Seth waited to see what would happen as he was curious. This would involve him no doubt, so it was only natural that he would wonder what was going to happen. A few moments later, may think came to the door and turned on the porch light. Stepping out onto the lawn, Nathan looked around and then focused on Joe. "What are you doing here? If Kay knows that you're here you could also be fired," Nathan said. Joe quickly grabbed his shoulders and gently pushed him closer to the door. "Nathan, this is about Kay," Joe said. Nathan looked at him a bit confused. "What are you talking about?" asked Nathan. "Nathan, he knows. I don't know how but he knows? feels that you're hiding something," Joe said in response. "I have the biggest feeling that something terrible is about to happen to your family. Nathan, I feel you should leave. Take your family and go away for a long while. Just wait until this whole thing blows over." "Is it this serious?" Nathan asked. "Nathan, you'd know how Kay is. You saw him this morning when the boy escaped. He himself said that he should have had you killed. If he had a gun, I am afraid that he would have killed you himself. Now I feel as if he won't stop until he has the boy," Joe said. Nathan could only think this over. "We had considered moving to Cherico. But what about this house? We still have to sell it," Nathan said. "Don't worry about this house. You just make the move and I'll take care of the sale. I'll send you everything once it is all finalized," Joe said with concern in his voice. Nathan considered this and although he did not know if he could truly trust Joe, felt that there was nothing more to it now. The man had come to warn him about this new possible threat after all. "All right. We'll start looking for houses tomorrow. But I don't want to leave my two children alone at house," Nathan said. "Don't worry, Nathan. I will come and watch over the house tomorrow and the kids," Joe said in response. Nathan just shook his head and said, "Sorry Joe. But after today, I don't think I trust anyone from the company with kids. It's nothing personal." Joe shook his head and said, "No it's quite all right. In fact I should have considered that thought. How about you and I go into Cherico tomorrow and look at the houses and you can leave your wife here to watch over the kids. Any house that we find, you can always come back and show your wife at a later date." At this thought, Nathan considered it a good idea. "Alright, we will do that tomorrow. In the meantime go home and get some rest. Have a nice night, Joe," Nathan said. Then they shook hands and Joe went back to his car. Seth watched as Joe left and the light on the porch turned off no doubt signaling that his father once again was off to bed. Seth figured that this was the best time for him to do so as well as he and Samantha would probably go out to make another candy run. Chapter 8 In the darkness, Seth can see people looking at him. They seem strange, almost as if they should not be there. He looks for an exit, but cannot find one. Then one of the people comes forward. Seth can recognize him as Kay, the guy from the company. Seth starts to run away, but Kay starts to chase him. Seth is now running at full speed, but Kay is catching up. Seth doesn't know what to do. He tries to use his teleportation but finds that it does not work. In order to escape, Seth stops and immediately turns around. He starts to run directly at Kay. Kay is still running towards him. Suddenly Kay turns into another man. This man has chains that are connected to hooks that look razor-sharp at the edges. Seth finds himself wanting to stop but can't. The man starts swinging his chains, and readies for the attack. Seth finally stops, and readies for whatever is going to happen. "Prepare for your doom, boy," the man says as he readies to strike. Just as the man begins to throw his hooks? Seth woke up with a start. It had all been a dream. Seth turned to notice that Samantha was not in the room. She must have been somewhere else, probably in the living room watching TV. Sapp got up and noticed that it was around nine o'clock. So he decided to go ahead and get dressed. After washing his teeth in the bathroom and combing his hair, he went out to join Samantha in watching some cartoons. Their mother Maya was in the kitchen preparing breakfast. She saw Seth and smiled. She came out of the kitchen to greet him. "Your father is with Joe taking a look at some houses in Cherico. He will be back this afternoon," Maya said. Seth nodded his head, although technically speaking he already knew that this was going to be happening as he had already heard them speaking about it last night. Samantha, sitting on the couch, patted right next to her, so Seth could sit there. Seth took notice of this and did exactly that. Samantha looked towards Seth and said, "Today we should ride our bikes over to the store." "Yeah. It's been a while since we did that," Seth said in response. "Now kids, I want you to be extra careful when riding your bikes," Maya said from the kitchen. She then primed to steaming pools of oatmeal out to the dining room table so they can eat their breakfast. Seth and Samantha both went to eat. As they ate, a commercial came on for some new candy that Seth could swear he had seen at the store already. "I've seen that before. We should try that today," Seth said. Samantha nodded her head in agreement. "Since I'll be the one buying the candy, I'll make sure to find that," she said. When the siblings were ready to go on their bikes, Maya walked out to see them off. "Watch out for each other," she said, "you never know when bad people will be around." Both Seth and Samantha nodded their heads and got on their bikes. Seth waved towards his mother, and soon the siblings were off towards the store. Maya just stood there and hoped that nothing bad would happen to her children while they were out. After all, she did not want to have to keep them at the house all day long or they would get antsy since they were still technically children. Still, it was common knowledge to have them always be prepared. Especially with Seth and his special abilities. As Seth and Samantha took their ride, Seth took note of the wind against his face. He absolutely loved riding his bike, especially when it was on a day like today. Something about the day just made it perfect, especially when as he started to speed up, the wind would pick up. He noticed that Samantha also enjoyed the same feeling as she had absolutely no problems keeping up with him. They'd make figure eights and even tried to race each other along the way. They eventually made it to the street where the corner store was that they always got their candy from. Getting off with their bikes, the siblings took them to the bike rack. Samantha then looked at Seth. "All right I'll go and get the candy. Same sodas as last time?" She asked. "Sure. That would be nice," Seth replied. Samantha smiled and nodded her head. Then she went into the store and began looking around. Seth just stood there and prayed for Samantha to come back out when the time came and she purchased all the candy and drinks for them. Having done this trip a couple of times now, Seth knew that she would be in there for not too long. But soon he could feel the presence of those teenagers that had bothered them only the last time they were here. In fact not only could he sense them, he could actually see them coming up the block. "Well if it isn't our little friend," the leader of the teenagers said. Seth just stood there looking at them as if they were all pests. He did not need this right now. But obviously the teenage bullies didn't seem to care. "Guess to teach you another lesson. Or are you willing to give up the money this time?" the leader said. "No. I think a lesson is in order. Or do you want to end up on the floor again? You know like last time?" Seth asked as he got ready in a fighting stance, a smile on his face. Samantha walked around the aisles and grabbed the candy that she liked to eat along with Seth. She already had grabbed a couple sodas from the freezer aisle and was now ready to purchase the goods. Everything was going as planned and this was going to be a good day. When she walked up to the counter she put everything out so the lady could bring it up. After paying, she had everything put a bag and she walked out only to see Seth in a full on fight with the teenagers that have been there last time they were here. "Oh come on Seth," she said, shaking her head. Seth turned to look at her but got punched in the head by the leader of the teenagers. "I'm not the one that started it," he said. "Yes but you're probably going to be the one that's finishing it," she said. "Your brother can't finish anything because he is a loser," the teenage leader said. Seth only got angry at this remark and turned around to face him. "Yeah? Well finish this!" Seth said as he quickly gave the leader a kick to the crotch. As the teenager felt the instant pain, Seth then gave him a strong punch to the face and the leader was down. "Anyone else want to say I can't finish anything?" He asked with a victorious smirk on his face. It was all the teenagers could do just to keep their leader from losing his humanity. They quickly grabbed him and dragged him off. Set only turned to his sister and shrugged. "You are a nerd, Seth," she said as she gave him his soda. But suddenly something felt off. Figuring that he'd shrug it off, Seth motioned for her Samantha to get on her bike and soon they were off. As they rode down the road, set could not get rid of that nagging feeling. Stomping his bike, he took a look around. Samantha stopped her bike shortly after, and walked back to him. "What's wrong?" She asked. "Someone's following us," Seth replied. Samantha walked over to him and stood right next to him. "We should go," she said. Seth could definitely agree. He readied to teleport them both out of the area and back to the house. But before he could do that, our car came speeding towards them. Inside of it where the teenagers. The leader of the teens was the one driving the car. Seth grew tense and immediately set his destination in his mind in order to teleport. But something happened that he had not actually expected due to the fact that he was concentrating so hard on the teleportation. One of the teens lowered the window and pointed a gun at them. Seth noticed in this quickly and turned to run. Instantly the fog formed and Seth and Samantha worth going through it just as gunfire started. Seth heard a yelp, but didn't want to stop for fear that he and Samantha would get hit by gunfire. When Seth and Samantha arrived back at their house he quickly let go of her and sat down on the ground. His eyes were closed, and he can feel his heart beat going quite fast, due to the tension that had been caused by the teenagers and their apparent attempt to kill the siblings. Then he took note of the fact that Samantha was not talking. Looking over to her, she noticed that something was wrong. She was lying on the ground as if she was hit from the back by something. And then it hit him. Samantha was the one that gave out a yelp. The bullets had hit Samantha in the back. Seth heard the front door open and turned to see his mother coming out to greet them. "Seth, what's wrong? You look as if you were running all the way from the store," she said. But then she noticed Samantha and gasped. She ran over to them and quickly began checking her out. But she did not need to look long or hard in order to spot holes in the back of her shirt. What seemed like forever was only just a few seconds before Maya screamed tears of pain. Samantha was dead. Chapter 9 The ambulance had arrived by the time that Joe and Nathan returned in the van. When Nathan heard the news of what had happened, he could not help shed tears himself. Joe had decided to leave and left his condolences. When Nathan had asked where Seth currently was, Maya told him that Seth was in his room. Things had been bad. Maya had shed her tears, and Nathan had shed his as well. But Seth had shed no tears at all. Maya wondered if she should worry about this. All this emotion bottled up may cause Seth to explode into a rage in the future. With his emotions kept inside?or maybe he had no emotions. But Maya definitely felt that Seth should have some sort of outlet. "What are we going to do about him? He can't stay like this Nathan. He has to have a way to release his pain," she said. Nathan considered this and knew of something that might work. He nodded his head and then walked away. He waited as Maya relieved the police and the paramedics. Seth would have to answer some questions later when he felt ready to do so. Maya then left to visit family so they could set up a funeral. She left the boys alone so they could have some family time. Nathan had considered something that he would himself have done. The main thing about Nathan was that he was a big fan of classical music. So he had bought something for his daughter, Samantha, for her 11th birthday which was just coming up. It was the most expensive thing he could find, although it was the simplest thing that he figured was something that Samantha would enjoy greatly. So walking over to Seth's room, He couldn't help but see the pain hidden within the boy's eyes. Seth had been sitting on his bed looking at up of Samantha. There was a lot of love there. A lot of love that was lost today. Seth turned and saw that he was standing there. "I have something. Something that I was going to give Samantha. Something that I feel Samantha would want you have now. Do you feel up to helping me carry something out of the van?" Nathan said. Seth just sat there staring at him for a moment. Then he stood up and nodded his head. "Sure," Seth said. It was all Nathan wanted him to say. There was nothing else. Nathan walked out onto the driveway and opened the back doors to the van. Inside it was something covered in what looked like blankets. Set followed him and took a look at the item. Nathan got into the van and positioned himself on the other end, while Seth readied himself to help drag the item out. Upon the item out of the van, they said it on the driveway. Seth couldn't help but wonder what it was that Samantha was to receive. It did not matter much now, as it was Seth to receive it now. He then helped his father bring it into the house. There they rested in the living room and make them brought Seth a glass of lemonade. Seth took it and took a sip. "As you know, your mother and I have been redecorating our den so we can have more space. This is the very reason we were doing it," Nathan said. Seth took a look at the item and wondered what it was. He then looked at his father. Nathan nodded his head and motioned for the boy to go ahead and take a look. Seth stood up and put the glass of lemonade on the night table that was nearby. He then walked over to the item and began unwrapping blankets from it. Underneath it was a piano that looked strong and sturdy, yet small and compact enough to fit in the space that they had put in the den. "Your sister shared a love of classical music with me. I was just going to give her something to help her along with her love of such music. You see Seth, music has a very strong healing factor. It has a very nurturing way of being quite calming. And now it is yours," Nathan said. Seth just took a look at it, no doubt trying to figure out if he truly deserved it. "I don't know how to play," he said finally. "That's quite alright, Seth. Your sister didn't either," Nathan said. He walked into the kitchen and grabbed a chair. Then he put it right in front of the piano. "Go ahead and give it a shot," he said. Seth sat on the chair and began playing. Nathan sat on the couch nearest to Seth and just listened. For the most part Seth really wasn't all that bad. Nathan and then grabbed a book that must have been hidden underneath the couch and he held it out to Seth. Seth took a look at the book and grabbed it. "This will help you learn about the different keys and such," Nathan said, "now come on and help me move it to the den before your mother comes and sees it here." When Maya came back home, Nathan pulled her what he had done and she smiled sadly. To Maya, it was only fitting that Seth would receive the last item that Samantha would have gotten for her birthday. Especially if it was something that would calm his soul if he were ever in pain. She then went towards his room and saw that he was reading the manual on how to play the piano that was given to him by Nathan. She loved her son and hope that nothing would happen to him. She did not want to worry about losing the last of her children; the last of her world. Then she walked back to her husband, held him tight, and cried into his shoulder. Nathan just held her there, comforting her. Chapter 10 A week past and things happened as they should. On Tuesday, Seth had come into the police station to give a report in on what had happened. He had tried to describe the scene that had transpired before and what led up to the shooting. The officer taking the report, seemed impressed with Seth's memory of the event. He also seemed impressed with the way that Seth had stood up for himself and tried to get them to safety. Actually Seth had kept out a few things that the cop needed not know. Most importantly the superpowers that he had used. Once they had left the station, Nathan felt it was important to try to advance the moving process faster. So they had gone to see the house that Joe and he had chosen for them. Upon seeing the house, seven felt a slight bit more at ease. But he knew that without his sister, it would not be the same. Upon coming home, said went to go to the piano. Now fully situated in the den, Seth had a place of solace. A place where he could play music and relax his soul. He began to play a bit of a sad but peaceful melody. Maya walked next to the room and stood there listening. She considered that Seth was getting quite good actually. He always was a fast learner. She then walked towards her bedroom, where she sat on her bed and lay down. Nathan soon joined her. "Our child is alone," she said. "That's nonsense. Seth has many friends," Nathan commented. "No he doesn't. He's not the sociable type. He has a very good heart, but has trouble making his thoughts and emotions known. I could tell that on the day of Samantha's death," Maya said. Nathan could only think about this. "He seemed to show pain in his eyes that night when I saw him in his room," Nathan said. "But Nathan, he didn't even shed a tear. Is he incapable of crying?" she asked. Nathan didn't really have an answer for that. He remembered the day that they had gone to the meeting at work. He remembered the look that Kay had given Seth. And then he remembered the look that said had merely given him back. It had almost seemingly unnerved Kay. He wondered if Seth made him nervous. Was this the kind of weapon that Kay wanted? "he has to have emotions, Maya. After all, it's what makes us human," Nathan said finally. "Yes but Nathan. Seth wasn't made in the normal way. He was created for a specific reason," she said, "you can't ignore that." Nathan was left to his thoughts. "He is going to grow up just fine," Nathan said. All Maya could do was hope that Nathan was right.
